Will Jasprit Bumrah Miss the Edgbaston Test? Team India’s Tension May Rise (Source: NDTV)
Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed five wickets in England’s first innings of the Leeds Test, is uncertain for the upcoming Edgbaston match—sparking fresh concerns within Team India’s camp. The second Test between India and England is scheduled to begin on 2 July at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham. However, Bumrah's involvement in this match remains up in the air. His absence could significantly weaken India’s pace attack.
In the first Test, Bumrah didn’t get adequate support from the other end, allowing English batters to score quickly. If he misses the second match, India’s bowling attack could be in even deeper trouble. While there is no official confirmation yet on Bumrah’s exclusion, former Indian cricketer and commentator Ravi Shastri has hinted at the possibility.
Speaking to media, Ravi Shastri said, “Earlier, Bumrah had mentioned that he would play only 3 Test matches. Now the big question is – which ones? I think if he takes a break, it’ll be in the second Test because he will definitely want to play at Lord’s.”
Ravi Shastri explained that the Lord’s pitch is quite favourable for fast bowlers, and Bumrah can perform well there. However, he emphasised the need for proper rest before that match. If Bumrah plays in Edgbaston, he might miss the Lord’s Test due to the short four-day gap between the two matches. Ultimately, the final decision rests with the team management.
Shastri added that not playing Bumrah in the second Test would increase India’s chances of losing that match too. He pointed out that Bumrah bowled extensively in the first Test and now requires rest. India's record at Edgbaston doesn’t help either—it’s been historically poor.
Team India has long been waiting for a victory at Edgbaston. Despite coming close several times, they have never managed to win a Test match there. India has played seven Tests at this venue and lost three of them by an innings margin. In 1967, India played the first Test at Edgbaston, and the results have been disappointing ever since.
In 1974, India lost by an innings and 78 runs.
In 1979, they were beaten by an innings and 83 runs.
In 2011, India lost by an innings and 242 runs.
The 1986 Test ended in a draw.
In 1996, India lost by 8 wickets.
In 2016, they came close to winning but lost by just 31 runs.
In 2022, India again suffered a defeat, this time by 7 wickets.
Now all eyes are on Captain Shubman Gill, who is leading the side. Will he be able to rewrite history and secure India’s first win at Edgbaston?
